Scientific Name: Ocimum basilicum
Native To: India and other tropical regions of Asia
Basic History: Basil is a perennial herb grown in warm climates and is most prolific in hot, dry weather. For many cultures, basil is considered the “king” of herbs. In India, it is considered sacred. For the early Romans, it was a symbol of love and fertility.
Culinary Uses: It is used prominently in Italian, Thai and Vietnamese cooking.
Flavor and Taste: Basil is sweet and mild yet extremely robust. It has a strong, pungent, sweet and clove-like scent and is similar to anise in flavor. Its flavor is much milder when cooked.
Nutritional Notes: Components of basil protect cell structures as well as chromosomes from radiation and oxygen-based damage. Basil has also been shown to protect against unwanted bacterial growth.
