Herbs and Health

At a recent Indian Ayurvedic resort where food, health, eating and living were the focus, I was reminded that the salads that much of the Western world eats are filled with fat and calories….in the form of salad dressings. The average serving of salad dressing contains between 80-100 calories and between 7-10 grams of fat, and the average person uses between 1-3 servings……yikes! Not to mention the huge amounts of sodium in most of the over the counter salad dressings.

Here are a few quick tips:

Use fruit and herbs-for many salad dressings instead of fatty oils you can use fruits like raspberries, mangos, apricots, oranges, lemons, limes, tomatoes and even pomegranates as the main portion of your dressing, mix with vinegars and herbs and little, if any, oil.

Cilantro mango lime vinaigrette, raspberry mint orange, apricot tarragon, pomegranate savory, tomato basil

Use natural ingredients-instead of purchasing over the counter dressings, make your own using healthy oil substitutes without too much fat and calories. Yogurt and dill, coconut
