Why does my basil keep turning black in the refrigerator?
Brandy~Portland, Oregon
The most common reason for basil turning black in the refrigerator is that it is too cold. Refrigerators tend to be too cold for basil so we recommend one of two things; store your basil wrapped in a pepper towel and then in a Ziploc in the door of your refrigerator where it is typically warmer, or store it in a vase of water with the stems in water if you are using smaller amounts. Make sure you change the water everyday.
If you have a produce or herb question for Ger-Nis, please email us at and we will answer it in the next issue of Herb Blurbs. Thank You!
